The Cleveland Cavaliers are riding a wave of momentum into the NBA Playoffs—and now they’re looking to trademark the fan-favorite term “Cavalanche.”

Steven Taranto at CBS Sports explains that the phrase, used to describe the team’s dominant scoring runs, has gained traction throughout the season as Cleveland sits atop the Eastern Conference with a 52-10 record. Now, the team has filed with the USPTO to secure exclusive rights to “Cavalanche” (Serial No. 99069168) for apparel and merchandise, including T-shirts, sweatshirts, headwear, and even baby clothes.

The trademark application has met the minimum filing requirements, but it has yet to be assigned to an examiner. If approved, it will allow the teams to capitalize on their signature style of play—both on the court and in retail. In the sports industry, trademarking a slogan like "Cavalanche" provides substantial benefits: it protects the team's brand identity, prevents unauthorized third-party use, and opens up revenue streams through licensed merchandise.

With the first playoff spot secured, Cleveland is aiming for its first NBA Championship since 2016. Will the “Cavalanche” carry them to another title?
